No. 4 Michigan mum on Winovich's status

(AP Photo/Paul Sancya)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh declined to say Monday if he expects star defensive end Chase Winovich to play at No. 10 Ohio State on Saturday.

Winovich appeared to hurt his left shoulder Saturday against Indiana. He left the game in the third quarter and did not return. Harbaugh said Winovich will be evaluated every day, but gave no indication whether he will be on the field for the fourth-ranked Wolverines. Winovich posted on his Instagram account Sunday night, saying "To those who celebrated what they thought would be my demise, I'll be back."

Winovich was named an AP midseason All-American and is a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award, which recognizes the nation's top defensive player.

Tide chasing titles, rare perfect season

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Perfection is elusive, even for Nick Saban's best teams at Alabama.

The top-ranked Crimson Tide heads into Saturday's regular season finale against rival Auburn still chasing Southeastern Conference and national titles. An unblemished record remains in play, too, though that's been even harder to obtain.

Orgeron plays up stakes of LSU's finale

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Coach Ed Orgeron makes it clear that he doesn't see LSU's regular-season finale at Texas A&M on Saturday as just another game on the schedule.

While LSU's hopes of sneaking into the College Football Playoff are slim at best, a victory would give the No. 8 Tigers their first 10-win regular season in six years while virtually assuring LSU a spot in a prestigious "New Year's Six" bowl game. The Tigers have not participated in one of these upper-tier post-season games since losing to Alabama in the national title game at the end of the 2011 season.

Clemson looks to beat Gamecocks again

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) Clemson center Justin Falcinelli was getting ready for college five years ago when he heard from family, friends and other schools about the Tigers' five straight losses to rival South Carolina.

Now, the second-ranked Tigers (11-0) have a chance to hang their own five-game win streak on the Gamecocks (6-4), something that brings a smile to Falcinelli's face.

Syracuse hopes QB Dungey can play at BC

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Syracuse coach Dino Babers says he's hopeful quarterback Eric Dungey will be available for the 19th-ranked Orange's season finale at Boston College.

Dungey was injured Saturday in a 36-3 loss to No. 3 Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium . It was announced as an upper-body injury, with no more details provided.

Tennessee QB Guarantano day to day

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Tennessee is trying to manage an uncertain quarterback situation as it prepares to visit Vanderbilt this week with a bowl bid at stake.

An injury prevented Jarrett Guarantano from playing the final three quarters of a 50-17 loss to Missouri last week. An injury also knocked wide receiver Marquez Callaway out of the Missouri game early.

QBs Tagovailoa, Murray up for 2 awards

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and Clemson defensive tackle Christian Wilkins were each named finalists for two of the nine awards to be presented Dec. 6 at the ESPN college Football Awards Show at the Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Tagovailoa and Murray were each chosen as finalists for the Maxwell Award, which goes to the nation's best player, and the Davey O'Brien Award, signifying best quarterback. The other Maxwell Award finalist is West Virginia quarterback Will Grier and the third O'Brien finalist is Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew II.

Miles looking to build winner at Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) It has been more than a decade since anybody paid much attention to the Kansas football program this time of year, the interest in the Jayhawks having long since shifted to basketball.

Les Miles has changed all that.

Huskers seek 5-1 finish after 0-6 start

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Scott Frost's first Nebraska team is in position to finish with one more win than the Mike Riley-led Cornhuskers had a year ago.

That would be no small accomplishment. The Huskers (4-7, 3-5 Big Ten) were the last Power-Five conference team to win this season following a program-worst 0-6 start. To close on a 5-1 run, they must win Friday at Iowa (7-4, 4-4), which has outscored Nebraska 104-44 while winning the last three meetings.

Coastal champ Pitt's resilience pays off

PITTSBURGH (AP) Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi insists he wasn't making some sort of bold prediction. That he wasn't guaranteeing anything when he told fans at a kickoff luncheon on the eve of the regular season to clear their schedule for a trip to Charlotte for the Atlantic Coast Conference title game on the first Saturday in December because "that's where we're going."

And even as Narduzzi's comments raised eyebrows outside of the locker room, they passed without a ripple on the inside.
